Emergency flood relief funds in Seemanchal, Bihar, North East India

Flood is one of the most dangerous natural calamities. When we are talking about Seemanchal (Bihar) which is in North East India, this now seems to be a yearly phenomenon.

According to the statistics, about 73% of Bihar’s geographical area is prone to flooding.  Bihar this year-round has been severely affected by the continuous monsoon rainfall. Each year, the floods claim thousands of human lives, livestock, and assets worth millions.

Our objective is to provide temporary shelters for residence, provide basic essential food items and medical kits and provide mosquito nets as it’s the monsoon season.

The region of Seemanchal is flood-prone, due to the web of rivers namely Mahananda, Kosi, Kamla, Bagmati, and Mechi. 

Every year incessant rain causes the water level of these rivers to rise and lead to floods in the Seemanchal area making the condition extremely poor for the inhabitants.

The plight of the people during the flood

Seemanchal is in the North-Eastern part of Bihar, it consists of Kosi and Purnia divisions. It has seven districts- Aaria, Madhepura, Saharsa, Supaul, Purnea, Kishanganj, and Katihar. During the monsoon, all these areas are adversely affected.

   ●   The area is Muslim-dominated and majorly depends on the

         agricultural activities for their earnings. Due to the flood, every year,

         the land is engulfed by the river water, and their crops are destroyed

         leaving them nothing to depend on. Moreover, due to the flood, there  

         is soil erosion causing the quality of the soil to degrade and making it 

         difficult for these people to grow crops in the next season. It leaves 

         the agricultural land unviable in the affected region.

   ●   During the flood, they don’t have anything to survive or depend upon

        as they lose everything to the dangerous flood. They depend on the

        food and essential items provided to them by the NGOs and

        government. Many times, it so happens that due to the lack of the

        proper and timely supply of these essential items they lose their lives

   ●   Last year the situation was even worse, with COVID, people were in     

        great fear if there would be some other diseases arising due to the      

        floods. Floods are known to lead to diseases like malaria, dengue, etc.

        Once this happens people do not even get proper medical assistance

   ●   Also, during these floods, people lose their valuable houses and 

        livestock and after the flood, they are like nomads who have no house 

        of their own and they have to restart their lives, which becomes a 

        difficult task after the flood as they do not have any source of regular

It is hard to see these people cry for the near and dear ones whom they lost during the flood. The pain of being homeless and without any future source of income is also unbearable. We need your support to ease some of the pain by helping them recover through this ordeal. Our objective is to provide temporary shelters for residence, provide basic essential food items and medical kits and provide mosquito nets as it’s the monsoon season.

Our Facebook profile has all the latest activities and projects we have completed. We have a solid track record of completing many projects and we follow the guidelines set out by the charities commission in terms of governance, reporting, and compliance.

SIF just wants to bring a ray of hope into the lives of these people. SIF is taking this initiative to organize this special campaign to raise funds on this platform for Seemanchal, Bihar. We have specific goals - to provide them temporary shelters, food kits along with medical kits to people in the worst affected areas.

The funds donated will be disbursed by SIF India starting with food kits that contain essential, locally produced food items to ensure families do not go hungry when they return to their homes.

Our aim is to bring a ray of hope in this darkness - InshaAllah.
